interchangeable. “Magnesium” on the label tells you very little, because

Why
magnesium matters for sleep in the first place
Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in more than 300 enzymatic
reactions in the body, including muscle and nerve function, blood
glucose control, and energy production (National Institutes of Health,

Professionals). Relevant to sleep, magnesium helps regulate the
neurotransmitter GABA, the main calming signal in the nervous system,
and it plays a role in the body’s stress response.
Here is the catch: many people simply do not get enough. National
survey data have repeatedly shown that a substantial share of adults
consume less than the estimated average requirement of magnesium from
food alone. When intake is low, topping up may help support normal
nervous-system function and, for some people, more restful sleep. If
your magnesium status is already good, adding more is unlikely to
transform your nights — your body excretes the excess.
A frequently cited randomized, double-blind trial in older adults
with insomnia found that 500 mg of magnesium daily for eight weeks
improved several subjective and objective measures of sleep, including
sleep time and sleep efficiency, compared with placebo (Abbasi et al.,
2012, Journal of Research in Medical Sciences). It is a small
study in a specific population, so treat it as promising rather than
definitive — but it is a reasonable signal that magnesium can support
sleep when intake or status is low.

The single most important variable between forms is
bioavailability — how much elemental magnesium actually
crosses into your bloodstream — followed by how the compound behaves in
your gut and how the attached molecule affects you.
Magnesium
glycinate: the sleep-friendly choice
Magnesium glycinate (also sold as magnesium bisglycinate) is
magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. It is popular for sleep and
relaxation for two reasons.
First, it is highly bioavailable and generally well tolerated.
Because it is an “organic” chelated form, it tends to be gentler on the
digestive system than inorganic salts like oxide, meaning it is much
less likely to cause the loose stools that put people off magnesium
entirely.
Second, the glycine itself is interesting. Glycine is an amino acid
that has been studied on its own for sleep: small trials have reported
that 3 grams of glycine before bed improved subjective sleep quality and
reduced daytime sleepiness (for example, Inagawa et al., 2006, and
Yamadera et al., 2007, both in sleep-focused journals). The glycine dose
you get from a magnesium glycinate supplement is much smaller than those
study doses, so do not expect a standalone glycine effect — but pairing
a calming amino acid with a well-absorbed magnesium is a sensible
combination, which is why glycinate is the form most often recommended
when the goal is sleep and calm.

other forms.
Magnesium
citrate: well-absorbed, but with a laxative edge
Magnesium citrate is magnesium bound to citric acid. It is also well
absorbed — comparison studies of magnesium forms generally rank citrate
among the more bioavailable options, ahead of oxide (for example, Walker
et al., 2003, Magnesium Research, which found an organic form
more bioavailable than oxide).
The trade-off is its osmotic, laxative effect. Magnesium citrate
draws water into the intestines, which is exactly why it is used at
higher doses as a bowel prep and an over-the-counter constipation
remedy. At supplement doses this is usually mild, and for someone who
tends toward constipation it can even be a welcome side benefit. But if
your goal is purely sleep, a form that may loosen your stools is not
always what you want in the hours before bed.
Best for: people who want good absorption and do not
mind — or actively want — a gentle laxative effect. Less ideal if
bathroom trips would disrupt your night.
Magnesium oxide:
cheap, but poorly absorbed
Magnesium oxide is the form you will most often find in bargain-bin
multivitamins and generic “magnesium” tablets, because it is inexpensive
and packs a lot of elemental magnesium per pill on paper. The problem is
absorption. Magnesium oxide has consistently shown low bioavailability
in human studies — one often-cited comparison found the fractional
absorption of magnesium oxide was only around 4%, dramatically lower
than an organic form tested alongside it (Firoz & Graff, 2001,
Magnesium Research).
Because so much of it passes through unabsorbed, magnesium oxide is
more likely to cause an osmotic laxative effect while delivering less
usable magnesium to your system. It does have a legitimate role — it is
used clinically for constipation and for short-term relief of
heartburn/indigestion — but it is generally the weakest choice when your
goal is to raise magnesium status and support sleep.
Best for: occasional constipation relief on a
budget. Not the first pick for sleep.

- Read the “elemental” number. A 1,000 mg magnesium

labels state the elemental magnesium content. Dose based on that
figure. - Timing: for sleep, 30 to 60 minutes before bed is a
common approach, though the day-to-day benefit of raising your overall
magnesium status matters more than exact timing. - Start low. Begin at the lower end and increase
gradually to gauge tolerance and avoid digestive upset.
Who should be cautious
Magnesium supplements are generally considered safe for healthy
adults at recommended doses, but a few groups should check with a
clinician first. People with kidney disease or reduced kidney function
can accumulate magnesium to dangerous levels and should not supplement
without medical guidance. Magnesium can also interact with certain
medications, including some antibiotics (tetracyclines and
fluoroquinolones), bisphosphonates, and diuretics (NIH Office of Dietary
